We were recently asked about what other sort of work GreenCon does, outside the agricultural sector (and the dairy industry, in particular).
Good question!
In addition to designing and building hundreds of dairies, GreenCon has built a huge stockpile of experience with construction on gas plants and with other commercial businesses like Fonterra, Saputo and McColls. We also perform subcontracted work for civil companies within the industry, such as Fulton Hogan, Duggan Civil and MiBus Brothers. And enjoy a long-standing relationship with our local municipalities such as the Corangamite Shire, the Moyne Shire and the Warrnambool City Council, among others.
We do a very wide range of work for those clients – it all depends on what they need us to do.
In fact, earlier this year a WCC photographer captured our Tom Nicholson installing tactile ground surface indicators (yep, we shorten that to ‘tactiles’) in Warrnambool. The WCC highlighted that work in a post on their facebook site.
Tactiles serve a critical purpose for the vision impaired. Their raised “pimple” design provides a tactile cue to help guide and alert anyone with impaired vision to changes to their environment through touch and contrast.
They help provide a warning of an upcoming hazard or transition – being placed near pedestrian crossings, intersections, train platforms, or bus stops – to signal a potential hazard or a change, such as stepping off the curb or crossing a road.
They also help those who are blind or have low vision to maintain a higher degree of independence, helping them move more safely and independently by providing an additional sense of their surroundings through feeling the tactiles’ raised bump underfoot, or with a white cane.
And their high contrast colour – in these photos, they’re bright yellow. But they come in different colours, as long as they contrast with the surrounding pavement – means they’re more visible for people with low vision.
Here at GreenCon, installing tactiles is an example of one of the varied things we find ourselves getting involved with.
We do a little bit more than ‘just’ build dairies!
