Late in the afternoon of Saturday 16 March Cobden’s good Knights became great.
At the Cobden Recreation Reserve, Cobden’s division one premiership cricket team ended a 23-year South West cricket premiership drought by beating the fancied Pomborneit Bulls by just 17 runs.
As reported in The Standard, the win was “A long time coming.” That was how the Knights’ captain Simon Murfett summed up the mood after downing Pombo in the high-scoring grand final that will live long in the memories of the hundreds who turned out to watch the game.
Cobden batted first and amassed 6-236 from their 50 overs, thanks largely to half-centuries from player-of-the-match Matt Kemp (77) and Kaplan McCann (58).
In reply, the visitors’ looked on target for most of the innings and even after a late collapse it seemed as if the hard hitting Tharaka Sendanayake (75 off 67) would get the Bulls home.
However, any hopes of a Bulls’ premiership evaporated when Sendanayake was dismissed by Angus Uwland (3-34) with 19 runs from 15 balls still required. The final two wickets fell inside Uwland’s penultimate over – the game’s 48th – handing the Knights the flag, just a year after they lost the 2022-23 decider to Bookaar.
GreenCon has supported the Knights for over a decade and was its major sponsor for the 2023-24 season. And we couldn’t be happier.
James, GreenCon’s Managing Director said it was a pleasure to help the club.
“Cobden cricket embodies so many of the same values GreenCon has – we are thrilled to be able to support what is a really, really well run community club.
And to see them winning the banner on their home ground, in front of that crowd… does it get any better than that?”
