60 years ago a 23 y.o. bloke called Lawrie and his wife, Thelma, started a construction company in Cobden, called L.H. and T.O. Green.
In the company’s early years they focussed on projects for the Soldier Settlement Commission and the Rural Finance Commission in southwest Victoria’s Heytesbury area, building most of the dairies in the Heytesbury settlement but also many more in northern Victoria’s Rochester area.
As the years ticked by the company sought and won a huge array of work across Victoria’s southwest, but also further afield into NSW, SA and Western Australia.
And as the company’s expertise resided in concrete and construction, eventually L.H. and T.O. Green was renamed GreenCon – the fusion of Green, Concrete and Construction.
Over the years the company has developed expertise in bridge construction; paved miles and miles of footpaths and tens of 1,000s of metres of kerb and channelling; built residential slabs; worked on southwest Victoria’s gas plants plus dozens of other commercial sites; and completed countless projects for our local municipalities.
And, of course, dairies… GreenCon’s presence in the agricultural sector – dairy design and construction, in particular – has remained at the company’s core since Lawrie first stuck a shovel in the soil in 1964.
But in doing all of that and accomplishing all those things, one thing has never changed: family and community. For no matter what GreenCon’s done, or where it’s done it, it’s a family operation that has retained deep, deep connections to the community.
GreenCon is extremely proud to call Cobden home and thanks you, Cobden and the southwest, for helping it grow and become what it is. We have six core values and one of them we simply titled “Community”. We know that without you, there is no us.
So from Thelma and Lawrie, their son James and son-in-law Gibbo, thank you to everyone who’s played a part over the years. Thank you to the businesses, the organisations and service providers who’ve supported us.
And while we’re extremely proud to be able to support the southwest and proud to help where we can, we recognize that none of what we do would get done without you and your help.
So, simply: thank you.
(And here’s to the next 60!)
