In early 2022 one of our guys was doing some cleaning in our Cobden shed. He lent on his broom, scratched his chin and started thinking… “I wonder whether we would be able to host a breakfast BBQ in here? For our locals? And maybe use that to help raise money for some decent local causes?”
We got together and, after pulling our thinking caps a little tighter onto our heads said “Yep, we can do this”. We wanted to help our community’s local volunteer emergency service organisations such as the Cobden CFA, SES, the volunteer Ambulance Community Officers and also seeing what we could do to help the aged care unit at Cobden Health. We wanted to try our hand at something everyone could get involved in, without any pressure, if they chose to take part.
So just before Easter 2022 we got to work cleaning… prepping… (more cleaning)… (more prepping) then cooking bacon and egg sangas. With a team of staff on the tools and help from the Cobden Business Network’s Laura Hultgren we managed to pull together enough breakfast food to raise $290 for our Cobden CFA. We didn’t think that was a too bad outcome for first-timers so…
We did it again, in June, raising $550 for Cobden’s SES. Then a month or so before Christmas we hosted a breakie BBQ that raised $570 for Cobden’s volunteer ambulance officers. And in June this year we hosted a mid-winter breakfast BBQ that, despite the weather being a little ‘fresh’, raised just under $400 for Cobden Health.
We concede there is nothing too fancy about what we do – and a sunrise BBQ hosted out of a construction shed isn’t necessarily everyone’s cup of tea – but we’ll continue running these events to do our bit to help raise both funds and awareness of and for our local volunteer organisations and community focussed entities. Why? Because volunteerism resides at the heart of every small community, and we tip our caps to everyone involved in any form of volunteer entity, no matter what they do.
