On any given day GreenCon can have staff working on a dozen or more different sites. While some sites are in towns like Cobden, Camperdown or Warrnambool, many aren’t – we often find ourselves working on farms or on sites located in the proverbial middle of nowhere.
But no matter where the job is, we do all we can to work as safely as possible. We understand that’s a legal obligation, but also recognise that it makes solid business sense. After all, we figure that when we are working safely it follows that we are doing things correctly – which is what our clients are paying for!
That said, we appreciate that things don’t always go according to plan, and part of working safely is being prepared for emergencies. We plan for the unexpected so that if the worst happens, we know what to do. And a basic element of that planning is knowing where we are located and, critically, being able to communicate that location to emergency services if we need to.
An online tool we use that helps us identify our exact location is a mapping system called what3words.
Launched in the UK in 2013, what3words was conceived by an event organiser who had been struggling to get bands and equipment to music venues using sometimes vague or confusing street address information.
what3words divides the globe into a grid of 57 trillion 3-by-3-metre squares, each with a unique and permanent three-word address.
The value of what3words was demonstrated last year, when one of our employees came across an accident on the Cobden-Port Campbell Road. Using the Emergency + app on his phone, he contacted the Triple Zero (000) operator, but struggled to provide accurate location details. For instance, he didn’t know the location of the nearest crossroad, or the correct name of the road the accident had occurred on. Nevertheless, he was aware that the Emergency + app used the what3words process, so used that to provide the operator with an instant and, critically, accurate location.
what3words is very easy to use, and you learn about it by downloading the free app (available from the App Store and on Google Play) or by reviewing what3words.com
At GreenCon we’re embedding it into our business-as-usual processes, using it to notate the precise locations of site entrances to help delivery personnel and, of course, emergency services.
Finally, if you would like to learn a little more about what3words from someone who’s working locally, contact Tony on 0459 467 835. Part of his professional background is in emergency preparation, and he would be happy to discuss the benefits of what3words to anyone who’s interested.
